Illustration Techniques, Week Four: The 1st Independent Study Assignment

NOTE: We do not meet in class during Week Four.

For our first ISA, you will create a pencil illustration for a Netflix title card. Use the textural pencil techniques we've been studying to date. Use the whole page in your sketchbook in horizontal format - BUT make sure you draw a horizontal rectangle frame on the page. NOTE: You will lose marks if you draw this assignment without first drawing a horizontal rectangle frame on the page.

Begin by watching some trailers from the show. Fill a page in your sketchbook with brainstorm sketches. Then use the brainstorm sketches as a springboard for a page of four thumbnail sketches.

You must include the title of the show or movie in your illustration. You must carefully hand-letter the typography. You can recreate the look of the type from the actual show, or design your own type style.

Step 1: sketch four small thumbnail concepts on one page of your sketchbook. Submit these to the Pencil Sketch03: Netflix Title Card Thumbnails dropbox. Your four thumbnail sketches should look something like this:

Step 2: choose your best thumbnail sketch and complete a full-size pencil illustration. You should incorporate props, an environment and all or part of a figure or figures (optional). Your full size final sketch should look something like this:

Describe the values in the scene with textural pencil marks - NOT standard pencil shading. You can review the examples I showed you in class by artist Mitchell Hooks at this link: click here or here NOTE: You will lose marks if you draw this assignment using the standard 'side-of-the-pencil shading technique. ONLY use the pattern and texture shading we've been practicing in class.

Your finished illustration goes in the Independent Study Assignment drop box. Check the calendar on the right-hand side of our course page on eLearn for due dates! ISAs can be handed in one week late but are subject to a 20% penalty.
