Illustration Techniques, Week Nine: Our Culminating Activity

We're now beginning our culminating activity; applying everything we learned this semester to an actual illustration assignment. Here are links to two articles about "McJobs" The first is a satirical article from Vice called "Getting Myself McFired" WARNING: this article contains graphic swearing. If you are offended by the F-word, do not click the link to this article. The second article is a business story from CBC called " Why are so many of Canada's young people out of work? " Read one or both articles, think of some ideas for your own story of a "McJob" experience you have had. Character Design, Week One/Two: Basic Shape Heads

For our first exercise in Character Design we drew a series of 12 circles on a horizontal 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper (or, in some cases, people used their sketchbook). Then, using just dots, dashes and other simple marks and lines, we created a wide variety of character heads. Next, we chose one of our designs that we thought was particularly appealing and explored the idea of modifying the head shape. Heads aren't all round... how would that same character look with a square or triangular head? Below are a few sketches of our new versions. Next, everyone found a partner and took a good look at the other person's head? Was it mostly round, square or sort of triangular? We spent about fifteen minutes drawing our sketching partner as a basic shape cartoon character. (images to come) This week's sketchbook assignment: everyone is doing a self-portrait, drawing themselves as a basic shape cartoon character with a round, square AND triangular head.

Illustration Techniques, Week One/Two: Pencil Shading Techniques, Part One

In our first class we learned about the huge variety of possible pencil shading patterns and marks we can make. We practiced reproducing the kinds of marks seen on the pages below: Once we'd completed all the various types of shading, everyone tried using them on this practice sheet: This week's sketchbook assignment: Search the term "Basic Shape Still Life" . Choose one you'd like to use for reference, then use some of this week's pencil shading techniques to reproduce the still life arrangement.
